Reflection 2: CALL in Language Skills

Assalamualaikum and hi to all :)

For today’s lesson, we have learnt 4 important skills especially when acquiring language learning. Usually, in learning process we use all the 4 skills in sequence in order to improve our language acquisition. The 4 skills are 1) Listening Skill, 2) Reading Skill, 3) Speaking Skill and 4) Writing Skill. Listening and reading skills are considered as receptive skills because learners tend to receive and understand what has been taught to them. These are also known as passive skills as we do not know learners’ fully understanding on the lesson. In contrast, speaking and writing skills are known as productive skills based on learners’ ability to use language through speech or written text. Learners will be evaluated based on their products.
In addition, we can relate today’s lesson with our previous chapter in order to develop more understanding in this particular course.

Receptive Skills
  1. Listening skill: Listening skill is the most difficult skill to teach because we do not know learners’ understanding on the lesson unless we test their knowledge. This skill supports structural view in Behaviourist CALL where the listening activity was done repeatedly, came in the form of audio-lingual teaching and it is used as a stimuli to develop learners’ acquisition in language.
  2. Reading skill: It is the most difficult skills to master as learners have to know the vocabulary used and identify the transitional word in order to comprehend the whole text. Reading skill is very much related to Communicative CALL because it encourages discovery learning among learners.

Productive Skills
  1. Speaking skill: Speaking skill can be put under Communicative and Integrative CALL because they allow learners to engage with learning environment by communicating with others. Nowadays, the advancement of CALL has integrated technology in learning process thus provided numerous multimedia platforms for learners to build their self-esteem and confident level especially in speaking; Skype.
  2. Writing skill: This skill tends to be improved using networked computers. It also supports the Integrative CALL approach because it promotes the use of authentic language in its product.

In conclusion, by knowing the characteristics of these skills can help us deepen our knowledge in language acquisition and improve our language skills.
